Happy Fourth of July, my friends! What a privilege it is to share time with you! I have been greatly encouraged this week as I have read through Psalms 31 through 40. I keep coming back to Psalm 31. We are celebrating our nation’s independence today, and yet I find the freedom I need the most help celebrating is my freedom in Christ. Verses 1-5 of Psalm 31 – I desire to live in these verses:
In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in your righteousness deliver me!
2 Incline your ear to me;
rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me!
3 For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;
4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,
for you are my refuge.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
I have been redeemed by the God of the universe! How immensely amazing is that?! Yet, daily I find myself camping on the reminders of my sin and failure, and not on the redemption I have been given! What would it look like to face my failures not with a guilty conscience, but with the joy that only Christ’s work on the cross brings?
Yesterday I read a blog entry called Jesus Canceled Your Mommy Guilt, by Gloria Furman. I was greatly encouraged by what she shared, and would love for you to read it as well. I think the teaching applies to any woman in any area of her life, not just moms. We are women who fail, and who feel guilt in many areas. But, if you have been redeemed by Christ’s work on the cross, there is freedom from guilt! How would your day look if you allowed yourself to feel the freedom you already have because of the Gospel? I think it is worth reminding each other. When our girlfriends call us to lament their shortcomings, let us remind each other of the truth of the Gospel!
